On Friday 27 March, Ombudsman WA’s work was recognised at the Institute of Public Administration Australia WA (IPAA WA) W.S. Lonnie Awards for public reporting, winning the Alan Skinner Trophy and the Bronze Award in the General Government Sector of Agencies with under 100 FTE’s.
The Awards recognise the importance of being accountable and transparent in a succinct and independent way. It encourages and celebrates excellence in annual reporting, which is central to good corporate governance.
The Allan Skinner Trophy is given to a General Government Sector organisation for an outstanding report which stands out for remarkable progress, creative execution, or a unique approach to engagement, which goes beyond the general award category criteria.
The Judges’ Comments: Ombudsman Western Australia offers a markedly strengthened report that is open, structured and candid about challenges and reform. With a good use of case studies, transparent performance discussion and a thoughtful account of organisational transition, the agency demonstrates renewed focus on accountability and service to the community.
The WS Lonnie Awards were established in 1984 following a bequest from Mrs H.L. Lonnie in memory of her late husband Mr W.S. Lonnie MC CBE MVO. Mr Lonnie had a long and distinguished career in the State public service, culminating in his final post as Under Secretary, Premier’s Department during the premiership of Sir Charles Court. Our Principal Assistant Ombudsman Complaint Resolution, Brianna Lonnie, is their granddaughter and speaks on behalf of the family at the award presentation.
