About the Scheme
The Scheme improves how organisations respond to allegations of child-related harm by their employees. It helps keep children safe by making sure organisations investigate properly.
The Scheme requires organisations that care for or supervise children:
- to report allegations of “reportable conduct” to us
- act to prevent children from harm or further harm
- investigate allegations and report outcomes to us
- cooperate with investigations by police, child protection and/or our office.
Who it applies to
The types of organisations covered by the Scheme include:
- Western Australian Government departments and authorities, and local governments
- Child protection and out-of-home care services
- childcare services
- education services
- health services
- justice and detention services
- accommodation and residential services
- religious institutions, and
- disability services.
What is reportable conduct
The reportable conduct covered by the Scheme includes:
- sexual offences
- sexual misconduct
- physical assault
- other prescribed offences
- significant neglect of a child, and
- any behaviour that causes significant emotional or psychological harm to a child.
Our role
We oversee and monitor how organisations handle these allegations and check they protect children.
We can help organisations to develop the systems they need to make sure they handle allegations appropriately. We also provide education and resources.
We can also investigate the matter in serious cases.
